There’s nothing like NEW INC. at the New Museum. Since 2022 I’ve had the honor of working with this growing network of creative practitioners as a Mentor, and a lead producer of their 2023 DEMO Festival - the organization’s first multi-site festival across a variety of Manhattan sites showcasing new work by their annual cohort.
NEW INC. is an accelerator now entering its 11th year - that welcomes artists, technologists, designers, architects, creative entrepreneurs, cultural producers and socially-engaged practitioners at all stages of their careers into a year long program to advance their work. DEMO is a festival that culminates this journey, with exhibitions, performances, lectures and more that attracts audiences from around NYC and the world. The program is organized into thematic tracks: Art&Code, Creative Science, Extended Realities, Social Architecture, and Cooperative Studies which means members are not separated by the field or medium they work in, allowing members and mentors to share ideas across a wide range of expertise.
As a lead producer for DEMO 2023 I was part of a mighty team who worked with leadership, mentors, artists, and venue partners to strategize and execute 5 showcases that presented over 50 artists and new works. Festival programs across Manhattan at The New Museum, LaMaMa, CARA, ONX Studios, Dunkunsthalle, and the open-air public space Pier17 ranged from VR/AR/MR and interactive performances, to new media art, sound and video projects, site-specific sculpture, multi-media installations, and research-driven exhibitions.
As a mentor I work directly with artists as a sounding board and advisor on ways to develop their projects and profession— from process-oriented and creative decisions to technical exhibition solutions— as well as professional development—whether that be project management, networking, or support with business or grant applications. This is a mutual process of learning, which continues to expand my knowledge of the support creatives need to navigate self-defined careers and what is driving them to make work today.
